I've spent the last several years teaching in a school, and if there's one thing I've watched play out the same way, year after year, it's this: everyone agrees phones are a problem, and almost nobody has a real answer for what to do about it.

Students want to hold onto their phones. Teachers are tired of being the enforcer. And principals are stuck trying to build one policy that somehow has to work for every classroom, every hallway, every kid — all at once.

The "solution" most schools land on is a box. A pouch, a bin, a locker by the door. And to be fair, it does one thing: it gets the phone out of the student's hand. But it doesn't do anything else. There's no accountability, no attendance connection, no record of who actually checked in and when, no way for an administrator to see what's happening campus-wide without walking the halls themselves. It's a box, not a system. It solves the smallest part of the problem and leaves the rest — the actual value — completely on the table.

I kept waiting for someone to build the thing that should obviously exist: something that turns that one moment — a student putting their phone away — into something useful. Attendance that logs itself. A dashboard a principal can actually trust. A process that doesn't need a teacher standing guard every morning.
